                                         Using the Parallels

Compare your pericope with the other synoptics and come to your own understanding of the literary relationships.

Check with good critical commentaries, introductions to the NT, and articles dealing with the synoptic problem.                              

Note both similarities and differences in the paralells.   Do the differences help to identify the special interest or theological tendency of the author?   e.g.,  Is the word order different? Omissions? Additions?  Difference in context?

NOTE:  Beware of reading too much into these differences!

                           Doing Form Criticism

1. Determine the form of the pericope and investigate
    the history of its transmission.

HINT: Look in "What is Form Criticism?" (McKnight) pages 21-32.

                                                    Concordance

1. Use the concordance to examine other words used by the author in light of his own theological vocabulary.  

2. Do not confine yourself only to the words.  Examine the context in which key words are used.  Look for a pattern of ideas.  Be sensitive to the fact that words may have a different shade of meaning even when used in the same or similar context as your pericope.

3. Next examine any words used by the other authors of the New Testament and the Old Testament.  Note any similarities or differences in usage.  Keep an eye out for words that may be characteristic of a particular tradition.  When this proves true, determine how the tradition is applied to the particular situation of your gospel.

1. Try to place the context of your gospel within its historical context.

2. Try to place the comments in the larger context of the  author's thought.

3. After gaining the larger context, try to place it within the specific context of the gospel.
  a. What is its place and function, i.e., how does it fit into the context of the 
      gospel?
  b. What is the point or contribution it seeks to make?
      Commentaries can be profitable here.
